asker you have such an awesome design sensibility *__* do you go through lots of drafts when doing designs, or does it all come out in the first try? what advice can you give to beginners who want to get better at character design?

thankyou :D i go through a lot of sketching, i don’t think i ever really get anything on the first try. i also go through a long time with coloring; i think the colors are a big part of the design and i usually end up redoing them many, many times until i’m settled (i never really settle though haha, i keep redesigning everything constantly).

i’m very visual with my characters, concept tends to come second… by that i mean i will just brainstorm or hash together some sort of image that is interesting to me (ie: giant dog thing with trees growing out of it) and then from there start asking the questions - how does this thing live? what does it look like? then it becomes a sort of back and forth… you answer the questions with your drawing, the drawing raises more questions, and you keep revising and exploring more options until you settle on something that feels right to you.

i could ramble on :s if there are more specific questions i can try to answer them or direct you to resources that will help.

asker what is Esk's backstory? you probably get asked about that character all the time... but the design is just so great! i need to know much!

i’m no good with making stories… Esk just kind of “is” and isn’t a member of a group or species (as in, wasn’t born), just kind of popped out of the dirt i guess haha. i’d like to write some sort of story where Esk is the ghost of an animal or person that died in a forest under some sort of grim circumstances, and is now sort of trapped there, like some sort of ghostly gardener haha.

asker What's your favorite sort of day/weather?

i like bad weather cuz it’s exciting haha… weird storms and things like that. destructive weather. days where the sky is the wrong color like green or sunsets where the sky looks like it is exploding.

the disney animated feature film 101 DALMATIANS was released january 25, 1961, the first of the disney films that had a very different style. the animation was xeroxed and showed for the first time most of the original drawings of the animators. the corresponding backgrounds matched the loose lines of the animation perfect, the background details in line were xeroxed as well and the cels placed over the slightly offset gouache colored backgrounds. stylistically a masterpiece.
